I have made a number of lists that I see out of the story of the Good Samaritan and its surrounding implications. The old saying that marriage is a 50/50 relationship is terrible. “The Master Teacher,” writes Wayne Jackson, invited the lawyer “to scrutinize his own attitude (if honest enough to do so), and perhaps come to a better understanding of his Creator’s expectation of proper social attitudes.”. Christ does not specify that the victim “attacked by robbers” and abandoned “half-dead” was Jewish, Samaritan, or otherwise. He doesn’t pass by on the other side. An “inn” was “a public house open to all.” A public shelter is comparable to the Church of Christ in several ways. Who does the hearer of the parable expect to come by next. Went down. Point 2: Ethnic and social standing are no guarantee of right standing before God. He needs help. He was asking who and how much do I have to love. In Hebrew, the word adam means “man, mankind,” “the plural of men,” as well as “Adam” as a proper name.5 Thus, Clement of Alexandria rightly saw the victim in this allegory as representing “all of us.” Indeed, we all have come down as Adams and Eves, subject to the risks and vicissitudes of mortality: “For as in Adam all die …” (1 Corinthians 15:22). But when the story is understood allegorically, this promise makes sense, for the Samaritan (Christ) and his innkeeper already know and trust each other before this promise is given. Musées de Sens (France); E. Berry (general view), and J.-P.Elie (details), Photographs of background and bandages by Matthew Reier. The Good Samaritan represents Jesus, who paid every cost associated with healing the broken man. Reuben Clark Law School, and editor in chief of BYU Studies, One of the most influential stories told by Jesus Christ is the parable of the good Samaritan. Some early Christians said that the bandages represented love, faith, and hope, “ligatures of salvation which cannot be undone.” Others saw the bands as Christ’s teachings, which bind us to righteousness. The Samaritan provides an example of risk-taking love, and those who love Christ are inspired to follow that example. This connection may have been more obvious in ancient languages than in modern translations. One of its beautiful stained-glass windows portrays the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden at the top of the window, and, in parallel, the parable of the good Samaritan at the bottom. As the story ends, all travelers can feel safe, having learned that, according to this interpretation, He who “was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves” (Luke 10:36) is none other than the merciful Christ. Finally, the innkeeper is promised that all his costs will be covered: “I will reward you for whatsoever you expend.” Perhaps more than any other element in the story, this promise—in effect giving the innkeeper a blank check—has troubled modern commentators who understand this story simply as a real-life event. In fact, the story shows their hypocrisy. To the Jew, the above diagram represents the social hierarchy within the society. The original Greek says that the Samaritan did more than “[take] care of” this man but offered “care and devotion” such as the kind “shown by parents and nurses to children.” The man’s emotional and financial investment in a stranger’s care, his generosity, was “staggering.” What the Samaritan paid to the innkeeper was “the equivalent of over $1500” or enough for “slightly more than three weeks lodging.” His love was extravagant. Jesus told the Pharisee, “Go, and do thou likewise” ( Luke 10:37 ). The parable relates to the kingdom program of God by demonstrating what it means to fulfill the ethic of the law which is summed up in the command to love one’s neighbor. 1. We are not to ask WHO our neighbour is; we are to BE a neighbour.2. God rescued us from death for eternity, but He also restored us to communion with others and with Him today. This wine, the atoning blood, washes away sin and purifies the soul, allowing God’s Spirit to be with us. … The manager of the [inn] is the head of the Church, to whom its care has been entrusted. Finally, the innkeeper is promised that all his costs will be covered: “I will reward you for whatsoever you expend.” Perhaps more than any other element in the story, this promise—in effect giving the innkeeper a blank check—has troubled modern commentators who understand this story simply as a real-life event. Characters), The Net Pastor’s Journal, Eng Ed, Issue 37, Fall 2020. As the parable begins, everyone sympathizes and identifies with the lone and weary traveler. The wounds are disobedience, the beast is the Lord’s body, the [inn], which accepts all who wish to enter, is the Church. One can, though, argue that God is implicitly present in the latter in that God was the author of the story—or at least approved it. Musées de Sens (France); E. Its mild winter climate made it a hedonistic resort area where Herod had built a sumptuous vacation palace. A Jew. Jesus took a risk: “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). Jesus does not specify that the victim who was attacked and abandoned. 3. This connection may have been more obvious in ancient languages than in modern translations. 4. THE LEGS OF MERCYHe went to him2. 34 Powerful Proverbs On Our Words–to Inspire You To Consider Carefully Your Speech. Jesus’s audience in Jerusalem may well have recognized here a reference by the Savior to Himself. Love means moving toward others. He answered, “The one who showed mercy toward him.”. At more than 825 feet (250 m) below sea level, Jericho is the lowest city on earth. The story lacks a neat ending and many questions remain unanswered. Because Nazareth is across the valley north of Samaria, these two locations could easily be lumped together. Jericho was readily identified with this world. The Priest was an expert in the law and undoubtedly knew of laws like those in Ex 23:4-5 which commanded that you help your enemy’s donkey if he was lost or overburdened, but he was unwilling to help a human in distress. I have made a number of lists that I see out of the story of the Good Samaritan and its surrounding implications. But perhaps we are really the innkeeper following the Samaritan’s (Christ’s) instructions because we know by His example that we can trust Him. Chrysostom suggests that a Samaritan is an apt depiction of Christ because “as a Samaritan is not from Judea, so Christ is not of this world.”. Craig Blomberg teaches that parables have as many points as they do major characters. Symbols draw our finite minds to sacred truths that are embedded in the mystery of Christ’s incomparable gospel, and an allegorical understanding of the parable of the good Samaritan adds eternal perspectives to its moral imperatives. Oil. Look at Change ). God asks that we meet lost people in their painful messes and lead them to the cross, risking rejection but hoping to witness their salvation. Origen noted that “he went down intending to rescue and care for the dying man.” The Savior came purposefully with oil and bandages “to bring redemption unto the world” (3 Nephi 9:21). Samaritans appear to have emerged from the intermarriage of Jews and pagans. Remember that this is a Samaritan in enemy territory. (See Luke 10:25–35.). The Savior spoke often in parables because each has a deeper meaning understood only by those who have “ears to hear” (Matthew 13:9). Therefore, those royal expectations apply to all believers.
