The Animator's Survival Kit (Faber & Faber) has been around for almost a decade and is one of the must-have animation books in any animator's collection. Many of the 9 old men of Disney passed their knowledge down to Williams. There is so much information in it, each time you read it you are guaranteed to discover something new. Each is clearly outlined and shows you step by step his methodology to build any kind of walk you can think of. I can't think of anything to say about this masterpiece that hasn't been said before. There are a few good tips/references in the book but overall, there seems to be a lot of wasted space and seems to be for people who are really, really new to animation. Richard Williams is obviously a very 2D centric animator and whilst the principles he presents in the book can be applied to any animation medium, some of the points may seem a little old fashioned in places. However, I suppose this analytical mind has provided us, the student, with a lot of great information which otherwise wouldn’t be conveyed very well from a less intellectualised approach. Not just mouth shapes as a lot of books show but he goes into the anatomy of the head and the squash and stretch you can achieve in the jaw and skull. Never miss out on new tutorials, products or reviews. Every aspiring animator needs to read this! Question – My answer. (If you are committed to teaching yourself) I just got my copy of the DVDs last month, they’re amazing!!! This book may seem only applicable to 2D animators due to the hand drawn nature of many of the examples – however don’t be fooled! As a university student who is doing animation, I needed a book to give me all tips on how to draw and make some best looking animations, When my tutor referred me to this book I decided to check it out and I must say. For students and pros alike, this book is for the lifelong student of animation. For instance, things like the best way to flip your animation paper on the peg bar or the X-sheet demonstration. All of the information passed on by the Disney animators will have you digging out your copies of Snow White, Cinderella, etc. BOOK REVIEW: The Animator’s Survival Kit. What I like about this is he puts some of the principles into practice and explains in great specificity how to get the most out of their use – or ‘more bang for your buck’ as he says in the book. 27/01/2014 thejakbu Leave a comment. As you would expect, the pages of the ‘book’ can be turned with a finger swipe, but it’s also navigable by chapter title via a left-hand menu, and by thumbnail images of pages at the foot of the screen.
