Sometimes though, we want the increased linearity and increased dynamic range that transformerless circuitry offers, and that’s what the TLM series is about. At first, I was leaning towards the TLM 103 until I tried one and found that it didn't work for my voice despite the fact it seems to be the industry standard for voice over. Sensitivity and noise are very respectable (though not class leading). Just a little too bright for me. Now I wouldn't be a very good judge of mics if I didn't tell you what I thought wasn't so great about so... its rejection is awful. Neumann TLM 103 Vs 102 In a way, the TLM 102 is an affordable alternative to the 103. You also get -6 and -12dB pads and 40Hz and 100Hz low cut filters for reducing low-end rumble and mud. It was love a first sight and I just had to have it right away. I have recorded in a studio with U87s and they are truly awesome. My one grumble about the design - I really struggled to read the switch markings on the light coloured body in some light conditions. But on vocals... unbelievable. Smooth sound. There were not any situations where I felt that the high-frequency response was ‘harsh’ to me, but to each their own! Copies or clones of mics tend to mimic either the design or characteristics of existing models; I mention this because the TLM range has several microphones that aim to deliver the “family sound” of older Neumann mics but with updated specs, but the 102 and 107 models are designs in their own rights. Buy it! This mic took the cake by far. The mic is very warm. Neumann TLM-102 Frequency Response & Polar Pattern, Neumann TLM-103 Frequency Response & Polar Pattern, Beautiful studio space. ... and from Neumann GmbH of Berlin this gets us the TLM (TransformerLess Microphone) range that’s been around for some years now. Very nice. Learn More. The TLM-103 has a self-noise level of a staggering 7dB (A). This comes at an (insignificant) trade-off though… SPL levels. Top notch gear for the money. On the other hand, the TLM-102 has a self-noise level of 12dB (A). This mic captures evenly, and gets a clear signal with vocals with a very nice and smooth articulation. This is one of my greatest investments and I thank God for my new baby!!! Admittedly, for more "out in front" vocals, I chose my Rode NT1. Happy customers, one piece of gear at a time! Dealing With Imposter Syndrome: Making It Or Faking It? Very full sounding mic, with a clear upper grab. It includes some of the same features, like the frequency range, very low noise of operation, and the … (fat chance! I spend most of my time working with tracks that other people record, and I really can’t justify buying a TLM107, but I’m certainly hoping they might just forget that they sent it to me! I bought this mic 2 weeks ago. These mics are not cheap, and just having the Neumann name on them doesn’t justify the price; the sound quality does that. The max SPL of the TLM-103 is 6dB less than that of the TLM-102. No fancy switches, no extra modes, and just a standard XLR port. I bought this recently & was pleasantly syrprised. As you can see from the differences in the frequency spectrum, the TLM-103 has a shallower bass frequency cutoff/roll-off. 5501 U.S. Hwy 30 W, Fort Wayne, IN 46818 I just decided yesterday to give my tlm 102 to a test run on a tradition gospel song and I was so impressed. Its also the same price as the TLM102. After trying the TLM102 I was really impressed with how warm this mic is and easy to work with. There's something about it that just makes you want to keep listening to it. Huge upgrade from your entry level to mid tier mics, and quality of higher tier mics. I haven't tried to sing anything through it yet (not really a singer, but I can carry a tune). I have an ADK S51 that was $199 and it blows the Neuman away in my home studio. Frequency response is again very linear, with a slightly higher presence lift at around 8kHz which lifts vocals but avoids the sibilance band. Not bright at all, in the Presence frequencies per say, but clear in a nicer way. this little mic has some punch..ts worth a shot and I bet most will love the results..good luck! I have been through a ton of mics lately and this thing hangs with mics 2-3 times its price. It has a nice sound as well as a nice affordable price for starting artists. Buy it. I know a lot of people love it on acoustic guitars, but I wasn't a fan, but thats completely my preference, I like to have "crisp" acoustics. This is more than worth the price just for the sound I'm getting on my saxes. Very little eq'ing on the 7602 & I've never sounded better. With any mic, and certainly with one in this price bracket, you need to try it to make sure that YOU like the sound. Great little mic! While both condenser microphones are outstanding, the almost double-price for the TLM-103 is warranted, for its fuller, richer bass response, and crisper, airier high frequencies. I purchased this mic to replace my rode nt1... it was a upgrade in my opinion not saying the rode is a bad mic its very very good... but I wanted to experience a neumann .. so I grabbed the 102 and man let me tell you it has more presence in the mix than the rode..I mainly track rap vocals and it does a great job with that task. Each mic has its own time to shine, and on loud bass and electric guitar this mic sure shined. Required fields are marked *. The frequency response is pretty flat with a gentle presence lift above about 6kHz and it responds very well to transients. - Ed), This article was originally published in issue #30, To read the article in its entirety, view the digital magazine, Our website uses Cookies - by using this site or closing this message you’re agreeing to our Terms & Conditions, Cookie Policy and Privacy Policy.
