How could I not be charmed by the game when it's running on a quaint, inelegant device that sounds like it might shudder apart at any second? When you enter an industrial zone, the wafting smoke and deep red lighting make you feel the heat. !—but the already refined gameplay of BioShock 2 is still a treat to play. But I can forgive "Spitfire," the primitive top-down shooter found in BioShock 2: Minerva's Den, for a couple of reasons. The undersea world of Rapture gets another go-round in this sequel to the multiplatinum, award-winning first-person action game. Yes! Minerva's Den is a fine way to put BioShock 2 to bed, a story well told while revisiting Rapture and the solid gameplay of 2K Marin's contribution to the BioShock universe. It's not clear why you're wading in until the end, but the emotional and thoughtful dénouement applies a retroactive motivation of sorts, even if it's at the expense of cohesion between yourself and the character you're supposed to be, Subject Sigma. That's one of the many reasons the BioShock franchise shines so brightly--and the biggest motivation for playing Minerva's Den, an emotionally touching downloadable add-on for BioShock 2. Minerva's den is plain and simple well worth the price you'll pay for it and represents sadly what the game of Bioshock 2 should have been in this short side quest. There's a certain been-there, done-that vibe to your progression, but the excellent atmosphere helps fend off the overfamiliarity. Minerva's Den is a fine way to put BioShock 2 to bed, a story well told while revisiting Rapture and the solid gameplay of 2K Marin's contribution to the BioShock universe. He ponders subjects such as racism and the relationship between man and machine, and diaries featuring his beloved wife are heavy with emotion. It's a waterlogged journey both familiar and new, a proud send-off to 2K Marin's capable follow-up to the original BioShock. The new spaces one finds oneself in are expertly crafted, making Rapture feel fresher than the new confrontations with Big Daddies and Big Sisters. New foes include brutes that glow with fire and throw debris at you; splicers covered with a layer of frost; and ominous new Big Daddies that can blind you with the cannons they wield. The atmosphere, story, and intensity of battle culminate with a hectic confrontation that has multiple strong foes coming at you from multiple angles, and gives you a chance to use the plasmids you collect and the weapons you upgrade. BioShock 2: Minerva's Den Review This add-on's great pacing and memorable story are excellent reasons to return to Rapture. The latest 'Borderlands 3' DLC is an engagement party with guns, Shadow’s cloud-based gaming service now starts at $12 per month, Microsoft won't be at GDC because of coronavirus, New 'Shovel Knight' spinoff is a Tetris-like puzzle game, Scientists find neutrinos from star fusion for the first time, The best Black Friday tech deals that are already available, 'Mechwarrior 5' will arrive on Xbox in spring 2021, 'Marvel's Avengers' hasn't turned a profit yet. These events occur during those of BioShock 2, so you encounter many of the same enemies, weapons, and plasmids seen in the main game. Confused by our reviews? Coming face-to-face with a Big Sister is still terrifying, due in part to the screeching sound effects and shrieking music that accompany their appearance. While BioShock 2: Minerva's Den starts off at a sluggish and familiar pace, it eventually builds to an exceptional, tender payoff that stays with you long after you've emerged from the depths of the Atlantic Ocean. Break out the handy new ion laser. There are new plasmids, like the micro-black hole spawning Gravity Well, and new weapons, the Ion Laser, which can be acquired from the new Lancer class Big Daddy. Played single-player campaign to completion on Xbox 360. You're initially guided by a very polite Charles Porter (voiced by the unmistakable Carl Lumbly), who helped create The Thinker alongside Reed Wahl -- now a spiteful rival. Not only was it a long dead Big Daddy, but it was a prototype, something unique, and now Sigma is...well...just like it. For the BioShock fan who never felt the need for multiplayer in their plasmid-fueled experience, Minerva's Den is a smart, single-player side story to spend one's time and money in. You commonly have a buzzing security drone or two at your side, but annoyingly, they still tend to flit out of range when you try to repair them. You're a Big Daddy, known as Subject Sigma; the voice of an unseen supporter serves as your guide through Rapture. Welcome back to the beautiful city of Rapture, the dystopian underworld introduced in 2007's…. ADAM-harboring corpses are placed in smart locations that are tight enough to make protecting your Little Sister a rush, yet surrounded by enough doorways and choke points to reward you for carefully setting up rivet traps and mini turrets. The poignant coda that follows provides a thoughtful end to a story arc that starts predictably, only to blossom into something truly special. GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers. And, familiarly, you've got a bug in your ear in the form of Charles Porter, telling you where to go and what to do—namely wrest control of Rapture's central computer, The Thinker, from Porter's rival, the maniacal Reed Wahl. )That's always the charm of seeing the future depicted in history, and the journey into Rapture's computer core feels increasingly like a tour through the Sony Wonder Technology Lab, from before they updated it to be less Star Trek and more ... Star Trek (2009).
